Design Heroes: Peter Chung

Peter Kunshik Chung is a Korean-American animator, best known for his style of animation which is unique to him. He is also the creator and director of Aeon Flux, an animated series which ran as shorts on MTV’s Liquid Television. It became it own half hour television series. Chung was on April 19th, 1961 in Seoul. His father has been in the foreign service of the Republic of Korea enabling to move from various cities internationally. Chung has resided in Seoul, London, Nairobi, Washington D.C, New York and Tunis. His parents decided to emigrate to the US, where he lived in McLean Virginia.

Chung began studying animation at California Institute of the Arts in 1979 and finished his education there in 1981. His time at CalArts saw him progress from one year within the Character Animation program to the Experimental Animation program. At the age of 18, Chung expanded on his ambition as he decided to begin his animation career. He decided to establish a small studio for his animation projects in Maryland, where he began working for animator and illustrator Dominic LoPiccolo.

The Aeon Flux Animated Series, was created by Peter Chung. It began as shorts within MTV’s Liquid Television but progressed as it became popular onto a half hour series of its own. Chung’s animation unique animation techniques are vividly apparent within the series, as the style of animation and illustration is consistent throughout many of his other series such as ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Animatrix’. The progression of Aeon Flux onto a Hollywood movie, also portrays the progression of the series, however the original story-line set by Chung to his displeasure was not fully used.
